SENATOR VANCE INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO BAN “X” GENDER DESIGNATIONS ON U.S. PASSPORTS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator JD Vance (R-OH) has introduced The Passport Sanity Act, which would prohibit the Secretary of State from issuing a passport, passport card, or Consular Report of Birth Abroad that includes the unspecified “X” gender designation. It would also require the Secretary to ensure that each application for such a document includes only male and female gender designations.

“The last thing the State Department should be doing is wasting its time and your tax dollars pushing far-left gender ideology,” said Senator Vance. “There are only two genders – passports issued by the United States government should recognize that simple fact. I am proud to introduce this bill to restore some sanity in our federal bureaucracy.”

Senator Vance’s bill is the Senate companion to legislation introduced by Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) in the House.

“There are two sexes — male and female — and government documents like passports should reflect that self-evident truth,” said Congressman Roy. “Passports exist to accurately identify people, not play pretend with radical gender ideology. Anti-science, radical gender ideology has no place in our government, and it’s time for Congress to step in and restore sanity. I am proud to partner with my friend Senator Vance to advance this important, bicameral effort.”

For Background:

  • In 2022, the State Department began allowing U.S. passport applicants to select the gender “X” (“unspecified or another gender identity”) on their applications, in addition to “M” or “F.”
  • The State Department is the first federal government agency to offer the “X” gender marker on an identity document.
